Home grown success

When Phil Jackson started his business, Nature’s Landscape Services, in 1977 in a small house off Georgia Highway 85, he never anticipated that 34 years later, he would be running the same business with his two grown sons.

Phil will be the first to tell you that it has not been easy. He sacrificed time away from his family while his boys were younger to create the business that his two sons are involved in now.

Phil’s business has really evolved over the last 34 years. He has transformed a small retail garden center into a thriving landscape, maintenance, and lawn care company. Phil’s oldest son, Phil, Jr., is a graduate of Fayette County High School and earned a business degree from LaGrange College in 2005.

“I never anticipated coming back to work for my Dad’s company, but now it’s hard to see myself somewhere else” said Phil, Jr.

Phil’s youngest son, Adam, also attended Fayette County High School and attends night school at Georgia State University as he earns his degree in Accounting.

“I tried going to school during the day, but I missed being part of the company” said Adam.

Phil, Jr. and Adam’s story is a little different than many of your typical family businesses. They’ve not only helped to run and operate their Dad’s original business, which was landscape design and installation, they’ve brought their own passion to the business. Lawn care was added to the company’s line of services in 2007 through an acquisition lead by the two sons, Phil Jr. and Adam.

“I had a passion for the existing business plan but I saw the need for a local lawn care company in Fayette County” said Phil, Jr. “It gave us the opportunity to offer a service that is affordable for many more households,” said Adam.

The seven treatment weed control and fertilization program which starts at a low price of $37 per treatment has been a big success for the local Fayette County family with lawn care sales up nearly 90 percent since 2007.

“It has been great over the last few years during the tough economic environment to be able to offer an affordable service plan to our community” said Phil, Sr.

The company recently changed its company slogan to “Lawn, Tree and Shrub Professionals.” Phil, Jr. and Adam think it better defines where they will take the company in the future.

“Providing Landscape Design/Build services will always be a part of our company but we see a real opportunity to impact more Fayette County families with the seven treatment lawn care services” said Adam.

The Jackson family is not only impacting Fayette County families but in 2010 when most people were slowing down company growth, the two brothers launched the largest company service territory increase in the 34 year history of the business. They opened their service territory for lawn care services to Metro Atlanta. “We’ve got the right people on our team and it felt like the right time to make the move” said Phil, Jr.

Fayette County has changed over the years with more and more corporate companies entering our once small community. It’s nice to see a locally started, owned and operated company still succeed in our community with two young entrepreneurs who grew up in this once small town we all love!
