Mrs. Mae Maxine Fitzgerald (né e Hampton) entered peacefully into rest at home May 27, 2018 surrounded by her loving family.
She was welcomed into her heavenly home by her husband of 56 years, David W. Fitzgerald; her parents Richard and Katherine (Coleman) Hampton; her sisters Pauline Hampton Stout(Dewey); Lorraine Hampton Murphy(Fred); Betty Hampton Quitta; her brothers Everett ”Shorty”(Sylvia) Hampton; Howard Hampton, Robert (Margaret) Hampton; & Cecil Hampton; and her infant son Cleveland Madison Fitzgerald.
She is survived by her children, Sharon E. Fitzgerald, Sandra Fitzgerald Hall(Ed), David M. Fitzgerald(Ceil), and Michelle Fitzgerald Chancey(Paul); grandchildren, Jenna, Chris(Katrina), Laura(Steve), Ali, Cleve, Madison, Amanda and Michael; brothers J.R. (Lora) Hampton, and George(Loretta) Hampton; brother-in-law, Jim Quitta; sister-in-law, Evelyn Hampton; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Maxine was born in War, W. Va. on June 29, 1931 where she remained until her marriage. She graduated from Big Creek High School. While raising her family she returned to school to become a nurse, first as an LPN then in 1976, graduating from the Medical College of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She began work in geriatrics, then found her mission as an Oncology Nurse and continued to practice until her retirement from MCG in 1993.
Maxine, who was a shining example of living her faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, was a long-time member of Fleming Baptist Church in Augusta, Ga. before moving to Fayetteville and becoming a faithful member at Harp’s Crossing Baptist Church. She loved Jesus, her family, blue grass music, playing bridge, traveling, and enjoying every day the Lord gave her.
Services were held at Harp’s Crossing Baptist Church, 1183 GA Highway 92S, on Wednesday, May 30, at 10 a.m., with Rev. Dennis Watson officiating. The family received friends at the church for 1 hour prior to the service. They then proceeded to Fleming Baptist Church, 3027 Peach Orchard Rd/Highway 25, in Augusta, Ga. for services at 3 p.m. and visitation 30 minutes prior to the service, with Rev. Billy Atkins and Rev. Dennis Watson officiating.
Honorary Pallbearers were Willing Workers Sunday School Class at Harp’s Crossing and Ruth Bible Class at Fleming. Active Pallbearers were Maxine’s grandsons and nephews. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Our family would like to express our appreciation to all of Mother’s caregivers, especially Dr. Ferrol Sams, III, Compassus Hospice, and the doctors and staff of Piedmont Fayette Hospital and Clinics. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the building or mission funds for Harp’s Crossing Baptist Church or Fleming Baptist Church or a charity of your choice. Our peace lies in the knowledge that Mama’s tender soul has entered the Kingdom of God with the promise of life everlasting. She will live in our hearts until we join her for eternity.
