Tyrone’s Millage Rate Stays the Same, But State Rules Require “Increase” Notice

The Town of Tyrone has advertised a 1.86% property tax increase for 2025 — but officials say the millage rate itself is not changing.

Town Manager Brandon Perkins explained that the town’s millage rate will remain at 2.889 mills, the same rate Tyrone has maintained for 18 consecutive years. State law, however, requires local governments to advertise an increase any time the proposed rate exceeds the “rollback rate” — a formula that shows the millage rate needed to bring in the same total revenue as the previous year.

“The rate is proposed to remain the same,” Perkins said. “We are required to advertise it as an increase because it’s above the rollback rate of 2.826 mills.”

According to the town’s legal notice, the difference amounts to about $13.10 more in property taxes for a home valued at $525,000, or $10.71 for non-homestead property valued at $425,000.

Public hearings were scheduled at Tyrone Municipal Complex on October 16 and will also be on October  21, and 23, with final adoption expected during a special called council meeting on October 23 at 6:30 p.m.

If approved, the unchanged rate will continue Tyrone’s long-standing approach of keeping property taxes steady while accommodating modest growth in property values.
