The Slow Disaster Already Testing Fayette County

For decades we have either ignored climate change or treated it as a problem to solve later. Making matters worse, the issue has been dragged into politics and become a marker of which side you are on. A lot of people have decided it is not real, or not serious, or not our doing. That doesn’t necessarily come from stupidity or bad faith. Humans are remarkably good at discounting problems that are inconvenient or expensive to solve.

Climate change’s slowness makes ignoring it even easier. When danger arrives all at once, it triggers a jolt of urgency that demands action. Our minds are not built to address a threat that unfolds across many decades.

This article is not about polar bears or glaciers. Instead, it is about engineering. It is about how this disaster is already testing the physical limits of Fayette County and how today’s actions will impact our future.

The Range We Built Everything On

Everything we build is designed for a particular range of conditions. Our water systems, our storm drains, our roads, and our building codes are sized for a span ranging from the worst drought to the worst flood and from the coldest snap to the hottest stretch on record. We take the range the past hands us and build to its edges.

That works until the future stops cooperating. As the climate shifts, the record of what a place has already lived through stops being a reliable guide to what it can do now. The range widens. Rain lands harder than the drains were built for. Dry spells run longer than the reservoir was sized for. The infrastructure we rely on was built for a different time.

This scenario is unfortunately already happening. The remnants of Hurricane Helene pushed into Georgia in September 2024 carrying damaging wind and heavy rain hundreds of miles inland. Atlanta went under a tropical storm warning for only the third time in the landlocked city’s recorded history. University of Georgia meteorologist Marshall Shepherd called it potentially the worst strike on a major inland Southern city in 35 years

The worst of it landed to our south and east, but the pattern is the one that matters. Across those parts of Georgia, rain fell faster than stormwater culverts and drainage pipes were ever sized to swallow. With nowhere to go, the water sent runoff into neighborhoods and onto roads that rarely flood. Deeply saturated soil and sustained tropical wind gusts then toppled mature trees by the thousands, and as they fell they snapped power poles and pulled down lines, overwhelming a grid engineered for localized summer storms. Statewide, roughly a million homes and businesses lost power.

Infrastructure that had held up for decades was overwhelmed because the rain exceeded what it was built to carry. If future infrastructure continues to be designed around yesterday’s weather, similar failures become more likely.

What This Means for Fayette County

Local modeling from Georgia Tech’s Drawdown Georgia project predicts more extreme heat, heavier downpours, and more persistent drought across the region. Parts of northern Georgia are expected to see up to 20 additional days a year at or above 95 degrees by 2050. 

Let’s break down what this means for us in Fayette County.

Water

Our most immediate threat is not the temperature. It is the water.

Nearly everyone in the county drinks from four reservoirs: Lake Kedron, Lake Peachtree, Lake Horton, and Lake McIntosh. Lake Horton, the largest, can supply 16 to 18 million gallons a day, which sounds like a lot but is not a large cushion. In a bad drought, all the lakes can run short, causing the county to pump water from the Flint River and buy finished water from Atlanta.

But both of those backups lean on a stressed river system that may not hold in the future. The Flint is one half of the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint basin, and Atlanta draws from the Chattahoochee, the other half. That basin supplies metro Atlanta, irrigates farms in south Georgia, and feeds the Florida panhandle downstream. Florida took Georgia all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court over it, arguing that Georgia’s water use during a 2012 drought helped collapse the oyster fishery in Apalachicola Bay. Georgia won in 2021, but the fight itself never really ends because metro Atlanta sits at the top of the basin and keeps growing. Tensions flare whenever a serious drought hits and the rivers run low.

Warming makes all of it worse. Even if total rainfall holds steady, higher temperatures pull moisture out of the soil faster during dry spells, and that deepens the droughts when they come. Deeper droughts drop river flows and reservoir levels. They sharpen the competition among a growing metro population, downstream farms, and neighboring states for water already spoken for. Fayette is a small player in that contest, but Kedron, Peachtree, Horton, and McIntosh rise and fall with the same weather as everyone else’s supply. Sharper droughts mean tighter restrictions, higher costs, and harder choices about how much more the county can afford to grow.

Heat

Heat is the change that will touch every resident. Right now, Fayette County sees very few days a year above 105 degrees. The Drawdown Georgia modeling shows that number climbing substantially across the state through the end of the century if emissions stay high.

This is not a comfort problem. Extreme heat is the deadliest form of weather in the country, worse than hurricanes, floods, or tornadoes. It hits the elderly, the very young, and anyone without reliable cooling hardest of all. Add this region’s humidity to a run of high temperatures and the heat index climbs to where the body can no longer cool itself. A long power outage during a stretch like that would not be an inconvenience. It would be a public health catastrophe.

Rainfall and Flooding

The projections also indicate heavy-downpour days on the rise. Those are the two-inch rains that overwhelm drains and creeks, and they are projected to increase across Georgia. The old hundred-year flood will arrive closer to once every couple of decades.

Our own development patterns make this situation worse. Every parking lot, rooftop, and stretch of pavement sheds water instead of soaking it up. When a hard rain falls on ground that cannot absorb it, the runoff moves fast into low-lying areas, and Flat Creek, Whitewater Creek, and the network of streams that thread the county do the rest.

We have the record to prove it. Fayette sits far enough inland to dodge a direct hurricane landfall but not the remnants of tropical systems that come ashore elsewhere and push north. As I reported in a piece last year on the county’s disaster preparedness, the county has logged at least 18 significant flooding events in the past two decades. Tropical Storm Alberto did $30 million in damage here in 1994 and killed one person. In 2005, Hurricanes Cindy and Dennis pushed creeks over their banks within a single week, and an 18-year-old in Peachtree City drowned after being swept into a drainage ditch. 

Those are the events the modeling says we should expect more of, not fewer.

What If You Don’t Believe This?

Plenty of people are skeptical of these scenarios. Nationally, about 72% of Americans think global warming is happening. That leaves better than one in four who do not, and the share runs higher here in the Deep South. 

If you are one of them, you are in real company. Not all of that doubt is foolish.

Forecasting decades out is hard, and anyone who says the models are perfect is overselling them. The projections carry a range, and too often the public conversation flattens that range into false certainty, dropping the caveats and playing up the worst cases. When the loudest voices reach for doom, they make the whole subject easy to wave off.

But here is the part skeptics tend to skip. The core predictions were made a long time ago, and they have largely come true. 

NASA scientist James Hansen testified to Congress back in 1988 that warming would bring more extreme heat days to American cities, particularly in the South. That is the lived reality across the region now, where the hottest years for 95-degree days have all come since 1998.

A year later in 1989, researchers forecast that a warmer atmosphere would produce heavier and more frequent extreme rainfall. The U.S. record since the 1980s shows exactly this, a clear rise in intense single-day downpours

These were specific, testable claims, made with far cruder tools than we have today before anyone could know the outcome. The observations bore them out. 

Having said that, getting the direction right for 35 years does not prove every future projection. But it is the opposite of the “they keep being wrong” reputation the whole subject has picked up.

Even if you grant all of that uncertainty, the central point survives. The temperature record is measured, not modeled, and it shows real warming of a little over two degrees Fahrenheit since 1900. A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture. That is physics, settled long before any of this turned political, and it means heavier rain when it falls and faster drying when it does not. The rise in heavy-rainfall events in Georgia is right there in the observed record with the highest levels ever measured occurring in the most recent years.

What We Need To Do

Many climate articles tell you to recycle more and drive less. Those are not bad things, but the individual gestures do not meaningfully change global emissions. 

The real drivers sit at the level of national energy policy and industrial regulation, far from Fayette County. But instead of preparing communities for the threat, Washington took the official National Climate Assessment portal offline in July 2025. Speaking at the United Nations in September 2025, our president said, “This ‘climate change,’ it’s the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world, in my opinion.”

Fortunately, preparing our community for more extreme weather is something our local governments can do regardless of what happens at the federal level, and we have made progress.

Regionally, the Atlanta Regional Commission adopted its first Metro Atlanta Climate Action Plan in late 2025, a roadmap covering the 11-county region that includes Fayette. Closer to home, in January 2026 the Fayette County Board of Commissioners adopted an updated Hazard Mitigation Plan to break the cycle of damage and repair in hazardous areas.

Peachtree City offers the most immediate municipal example. The city operates a dedicated Stormwater Utility that charges fees based on the impervious surfaces on your property. That revenue directly funds pipe replacements and detention pond maintenance to keep streets from flooding during heavy rains.

All of these choices by our councils and boards made in half-empty rooms will shape how the county weathers climate change far more than anything an individual homeowner could ever do, but that does not let you off the hook. Keep your drainage clear. Maintain your mature trees. Make sure vulnerable neighbors can stay cool during a long power outage.

Preparation is needed for the weather that is coming instead of the weather we’ve had. We can start on that while it is still the cheaper option, or we can wait for the disaster that finally forces our hand.
