It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert “Bob” Mels, who left us peacefully on June 10, 2024, at the age of 85. Bob was a loving husband, father, and cherished friend. His warmth, wisdom, and unwavering kindness touched the lives of all who knew him.

Born on January 19, 1939, Bob spent his early years in his birthplace of Manhattan, New York. He first joined the US military at age 17 where he spent his initial four years in the Navy followed by another seventeen years in the Army. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War where he spent his time as a linguist and climbed the ranks before officially retiring as a Major

His dedication to the armed forces was only surpassed by the love for his family. His retirement brought him down to Peachtree City, Georgia, where he met the love of his life, Suzanne D. Ermatinger. They married in 1983 and shared a beautiful journey of 41 years together.

A jack of all trades and master of none, Bob enjoyed playing golf and piano. He was an accomplished marksman, avid reader, and lifelong learner. His favorite pastime was birdwatching with his best cat, Boots, while savoring a smooth cigar.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Suzanne, and their daughter, Courtney Bailey (Matthew). He also had four children from his previous marriage. In addition, he is survived by his brother, John Carrington; brothers-in-law, Robert Ermatinger and Thomas Ermatinger; grandchildren, Andrew Bailey and Olivia Bailey.  Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Velma Mels; sister, Barbara Hufford (Terry); in-laws, Russell and Muriel Ermatinger; sister-in-law, Carole Ermatinger.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date to be determined. He will be interred at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your favorite Veterans’ charity.

Bob’s legacy of love, generosity, and integrity will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
