The Sharpsburg Town Council on Aug. 17 approved the Briarwood Commons retail, office and residential development slated for the east side of Ga. Highway 54 a short distance north of the intersection of Hwy. 54 and Ga. Highway 16.

Approved by unanimous vote, the proposal submitted by Thompson Lewis shows nearly 40,000 sq. ft. of retail and office space and a dozen homes ranging from 2,000-2,400 sq. ft.

The plan showed the entrance to the development on Hwy. 54 with all masonry retail space lining the south side of the street. The property sits on 9.5 acres with Traditional Neighborhood Commercial (TNC) zoning.

In total, the retail and office proposal will include 11,000 sq. ft. of shops and eateries, 16,000 sq. ft. of shops and loft spaces and 12,000 sq. ft. of offices and a day care center.

The plan for the east side of the property shows a cul-de-sac with 12 residential lots on 9.34 acres. Homes are proposed at 2,000-2,400 sq. ft. with 1.6 lots per acre. The 1- and 2-story homes will feature all masonry construction, according to the concept plan.

The east side of the development extends into the Town of Turin, where the construction of approximately 50 homes has been approved.

Briarwood Commons is a short distance north of the intersection of Hwy. 54 and Hwy. 16. The Georgia Department of Transportation is planning to install a roundabout at the intersection to replace the current 4-way stop.
