Two Fayette County High School students are advancing to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh in May.

Janeen Thomas and Jubin Thomas recently earned that award when they created one of the top two projects in the senior division of the Griffin RESA Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

Other Fayette County students showed their skills at the fair, too, as more than half of the middle and high school students who competed are advancing to the state competition in Athens in March.

A total of 22 students (11 middle school and 11 high school) took first place honors to earn a trip to Athens. All students competing in the high school division placed either first or second, and more than 80 percent of the students in the middle school division earned either first, second or third place.

Students headed to the state fair in March include:

Jubin Thomas and Janeen Thomas, who will also attend the state fair; Tiffany Neto, Cameron Rothley, Billy Stonier, Sushana Sudhi, and Keaton Wimbish, all from McIntosh High; Will Evans, Simon Goldberg, and Luke Ninneman, all from Starr’s Mill High; and Quentin Byrd from Whitewater High.

Middle School students headed to Athens are: Kylie Dickinson, Dorothy Lai, Caitlin van Zyl, Jacqui van Zyl, and Robbie van Zyl, all from J.C. Booth Middle; Laura Anderson and Sarah Kelly, both from Rising Starr Middle; and Chandler Carabajal, Landen Clayton, Christopher Hamilton, and Spencer Kalafut, all from Whitewater Middle.

Students placing second and third include:

High School second place winners Bernard Ansa, Musab Javed, and Bharatbhai Patel, all from Fayette County High; Kevin Kerner of McIntosh High; and Lauren Becknell, Anslee Gabriel, Keoni Macayan Damien Robbins, Connor Rudzinski, and Branden Saunders, all from Whitewater High;

Middle School second place winners Xavier Hamlet and Stafford Saxton, both of Bennett’s Mill Middle; and Dhanush Avva and Evan Sanchez, both from J.C. Booth Middle;

Middle School third place winner Kamryn Meikle from Flat Rock Middle.

The Griffin RESA Regional Science and Engineering Fair is a competition among the school systems served by Griffin RESA, which includes those in Fayette, Butts, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Spalding and Upson counties.
