Fayette County will have no shortage of celebrations to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 19.
Activities to honor the late Dr. King begin at breakfast with the NAACP and continue into the evening with a musical tribute planned by the Fayette County Republican Party.
The Fayette County Branch of the NAACP is partnering with county schools and local businesses for breakfast and a parade that begins in the Fayette County High School parking lot. Breakfast will be for sale at 8:45 a.m. in the parking lot, where the parade line up begins at 9 a.m. The parade is set to start at 10 a.m.
Parade participants will walk from the parking lot to Hood Avenue to Georgia Highway 85 South to Georgia Highway 54 East and back to the parking lot.
After the parade, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., a commemorative program is set at F.A. Sams Auditorium at 205 Lafayette Drive in Fayetteville. Democratic State Rep. Virgil Fludd will be the featured speaker.
Later in the day, the Republican Party is offering a free musical tribute to King at the Sams Auditorium.
“Let Freedom Sing” begins at 5 p.m. and will feature several local artists of all ages as well as talent from Atlanta. Fayette County Commission Chairman Steve Brown will be master of ceremonies and the performance line-up includes The Atlanta Messengers, Diadra Dorsey, Arik Li from McIntosh High School, Hunter Callahan, Terrence Jones, the Darryl Williams Chorale, and the Byron Sims Project.
