Rollings Hills Baptist Church held Vacation Bible School for the families of Marnelle Mobile Home Park on Ga. Highway 54 June 9-12. Over 30 children (ages kindergarten through fifth grade) participated in the program.
Daily activities included recreational games, Bible study, crafts to help children visualize the day’s lesson, and group worship music. The last night of the program was a celebration for the whole family, with a cookout dinner for all residents and carnival booth games for the children.
This year is the fourth time that Rolling Hills has held VBS at Marnelle since selling its building and property in 2010 in order to invest more resources in service and mission work. Over 35 church members turned out to volunteer this year as one way to participate in that work.
“The whole purpose [of this event] is to reach others,” VBS coordinator Pete Trebotte said.
“This is our fourth year and I’ve really enjoyed building relationships and just being able to see [the kids’] excitement, to provide something they can look forward to every day, and to remind them that they are loved,” said volunteer Leanne Farrington.
Volunteer Douglas Wood agreed, stating that he was excited to be “able to be somewhere that not a lot of people go to and … provide this community with more than just tangible things.”
Volunteers weren’t the only ones with enthusiasm for the program. Fifth-grader Brian Ramirez has been a participant for all four years, and he disclosed that his favorite thing about the event is interacting with the teachers and learning about Biblical characters.
Fourth-grader Kevin Rodriguez added (while working on a craft meant to reinforce the story of Noah) that he likes VBS “because of the crafts, because I’ve learned that we need Jesus just like we need water.”
