Piedmont Newnan Hospital recently celebrated its DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award for Extraordinary Nurses winners. The recognition is part of a national program that began at Piedmont Newnan which honors nurses for their clinical skills and compassionate care for patients and their families.
“Participating in the DAISY Award program helps us give back to our top nurses who give so much to our patients every day,” said Nathan Nipper, chief operating officer at Piedmont Newnan. “We’re proud to be a participating hospital in the DAISY Award program to honor such great nurses.”
Renee Nestrick, R.N., a nurse in the surgical and interventional services department at Piedmont Newnan Hospital, was named the first winner of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
Subsequent winners were Eric Whitted, R.N. in inpatient services, Deloris Jordan, R.N. and Joanna Berry, R.N., both in the emergency department and Charrine Kirk, R.N. in inpatient services.
Nurses can be nominated for the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses by colleagues, physicians, patients and visitors. Honorees are selected quarterly by a selection committee and nursing administration team.
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 in 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, a little known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. The care Barnes and his family received from nurses inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and their families.
