40 years ago, the men and women who served in Vietnam returned home and were grossly mistreated. While we can’t undo the past, we would like to finally give these veterans the “welcome home” they deserved and should have received.
On September 28, there will be a “welcome home” parade of Vietnam veterans and community floats through downtown Fayetteville followed by a program of speakers, stories from ‘nam, and period music at the Southern Ground Amphitheater.
Chairwoman Alison Chambers states, “Our event is open to any Vietnam veteran – you do not have to be a resident of Fayette County. If you served in Vietnam, we want to say “thank you” and “welcome home” regardless of where you call home now.”
The parade will start at 11 am from the Fayetteville Justice Center parking lot located at 1 Center Dr., Fayetteville, Ga and will feature a flyover of a Huey, a Cobra, and a Bird Dog by the Sky Soldiers. Transportation during the parade will be provided to veterans unless you have your own vehicle or float that you would like to enter into the parade. The group also encourage individuals and groups to enter floats.
After the parade there will be a “welcome home” program at the Southern Ground Amphitheater on Tiger Trail in Fayetteville.
Along with the period music and speakers, a representative of the VA will be present to help veterans with any issues and benefits.
To help defray the costs of this event, wristbands are being sold.
They are red, white, and blue tie-dye, say “I Support Our Vietnam Vets”, and are $3.
