The Fayette County Board of Education took no action but discussed a wealth of topics at the retreat held Aug. 21. Among the retreat items that board members will comment on in the coming weeks were school system goals and objectives and a performance accountability cycle.

Superintendent Jody Barrow for discussion purposes proposed that board members consider reviewing a number of goals and objectives. The board agreed to review the suggestions and provide feedback in the coming weeks. By way of example, the goal of successfully educating all students came with 17 proposed objectives.

Other proposed goals, with a number of accompanying objectives, included providing fiscal accountability to Fayette County citizens, providing clean, safe and orderly education facilities that support learning and expanding the climate and culture of success, credibility and trust with all stakeholders.

Barrow in his comments on instituting a performance accountability cycle explained that it would function as a template of significant events and timelines that occur during each school year. Examples of those items included the school board and superintendent developing the school system’s operating plans along with developing goals and objective each August. Including each of the significant items on a list would be of particular assistance to new board members as they acclimate themselves to their new responsibilities, Barrow said.

Barrow during the meeting stressed his belief that Fayette County students should be competitive with any and all students worldwide.

Board members in coming weeks will also provide input on updating the school system’s mission, vision and belief statements.
