As part of the 2013 Fayette on the Page: One Book, One Community program, Fayette County Public Library presents the “What Unites Us” Film Series. This year’s Fayette on the Page programming focuses on the book “Outcasts United,” by Warren St. John, the extraordinary true story of refugee resettlement in a Georgia town, resilience in the face of extraordinary hardship, and the daunting challenge of creating community in a place where people seem to have little in common. It’s also the story of how one remarkable woman started something big with just a handful of boys and a soccer ball.
The film series is on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m, and features:
August 27: Call library for film title. As Allied POWs prepare for a soccer game against the German National Team to be played in Nazi-occupied Paris, the French Resistance and British officers are making plans for the team’s escape. Stars Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone, and soccer legend Pelé.
September 10: Call library for film title.
The true story of Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager who housed over a thousand Tutsi refugees during their struggle against the Hutu militia in Rwanda during the civil war and genocide in the 1990s. Stars Don Cheadle, Sophie Okonedo, and Nick Nolte.
September 17: Call library for film title. During the 1998 World Cup, Tibetan monks in exile in India catch soccer fever.
With no TV in the monastery, how will they get to see the most important match of the tournament? A humorous and touching story of what happens when one tradition meets another. In Tibetan and Cantonese with English subtitles.
September 24: A repeat screening of “Welcome to Shelbyville.”

Occurring annually since 2008, the Fayette on the Page countywide reading and discussion initiative encourages all Fayette County residents to read the same book, and then participate in related cultural, educational and recreational activities. Other activities planned for Fayette on the Page 2013 include a group book discussion on September 12 and an October 1 professional play reading by Horizon Theatre Company.
