On May 15 at 6:30 p.m., the Fayette County Public Library launches a new series of free film screenings for adults, set to run through August. The public is invited to “Dig into Documentaries” all summer long, with a selection of eight films covering a wide variety of true-to-life topics. The goal of the film series is to educate, entertain and enlighten, and the lineup is a potpourri of titles designed to offer something for everyone. Free popcorn and lemonade will be available for audience members to enjoy, courtesy of the Friends of the Fayette County Public Library.
“Because of licensing restrictions on some of the films in this series, we can’t publish all of the movie titles,” says Sarah Trowbridge, a public services librarian at the Fayette County Public Library and the organizer of the film series and other adult programming at the library. “To find out what’s on, call the library at 770-461-8841, or stop by and pick up the film series flyer with the full schedule. The film we’re showing on May 15 to kick off the series is a 2009 documentary produced and hosted by Chris Rock, offering a humorous and thought-provoking look at the role of hairstyling in the African American community. After that, we’ll explore such topics as autism, table tennis, romance novel fandom, post-Katrina New Orleans, and a Colombian library that travels on a donkey’s back. For music lovers, there’s a biography of an eccentric pioneer of electronic music, and a look at the role of South African freedom songs in the abolition of apartheid.”
The complete list of screening dates is May 15 and 29, June 12 and 26, July 10 and 24, and August 7 and 21. All dates are Wednesdays, and every screening begins at 6:30 p.m. A printed schedule for the “Dig into Documentaries” series, including film titles and descriptions, is available for pickup at the library. All movie nights are free and open to the public, thanks to generous support from the Friends of the Fayette County Public Library, and a collaboration with POV, the award-winning independent nonfiction film series on PBS (www.pbs.org/pov).
