While making an arrest on an unrelated case, sheriff’s deputies finally got a tip that led them to an urn stolen from a Fayette County home that contained the ashes of a couple’s infant daughter.
Deputies from the sheriff’s office warrant division were making the arrests Feb. 23. when they got the tip that the urn was located at a home in Spalding County. The urn was recovered from that residence the next day, officials said.
Sheriff’s investigators had gone to great lengths to recover the urn, posting a surveillance video of the burglary suspects which was broadcast on metro Atlanta television stations. That ultimately led to the identity of the duo, who were arrested: Shomari Qutrell Davis, 17, and Jawan Rashad Powell, 20, both of Clayton County for two counts of burglary and one count of entering an auto.
The burglaries occurred at a home on Ga. Highway 92 South and a home on Reynolds Place, where a vehicle was also entered. The suspects fled the scene of the Reynolds Place incident after they were scared off, detectives said.
