The Fayette County High School Debate Team qualified three students to the 2011 Georgia Forensic Coaches Association Varsity State Championship recently. The students were qualified by taking first or second place in their event at the Central Gwinnett High School debate tournament on Sept. 11.

The qualifiers are freshman John Cooper and sophomore Kristopher Wilson in Public Forum Debate; and freshman Virginia Lambert in Prose & Poetry. They will be competing against the rest of the top students in State in March of 2011.

Cooper and Wilson won the Public Forum division by beating the reigning State Champion Carrollton High School four times. Lambert defeated upper classmen from Sequoyah High School to win the Prose Poetry division in her first competition ever.

Sophomore Ryan Veccie and freshman Olusola Adegunloye also debated in the Public Forum Debate division where they lost in quarterfinals to a tough team from Westminster Christian Schools.

The Fayette County debate team is the first school in the county to have students qualify for the State Championships! The Fayette County Debate team is coached by Jeffrey Miller, Craig Skelton and Kahlilah Pagan.
