The Coweta County Master Gardener Extension Volunteers (MGEVs) have been busy as bees in a flower garden preparing for their Fall Plant Sale scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 8.
The annual sale features dozens of perennials and other sought-after plants, such as foxgloves, hellebores, iris and daylilies plus river birch and corkscrew willows, Japanese maples, spirea, viburnum and five kinds of hydrangea.
“Fall is an optimum time to plant, especially trees and shrubs,” said Fall Plant Sale coordinator Don Lambeck. “Planting trees and shrubs in the fall gives the roots the opportunity to develop over the winter. Come spring, these plants will have a much better chance of withstanding the stress of a Georgia summer’s heat and drought.”
Sale hours are 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Extension Greenhouse, located at UGA Extension-Coweta County, 255 Pine Road in Newnan, just inside the entrance to the county fairgrounds. All plants for sale have been propagated or grown by MGEVs.
“These are plants that have been grown locally and are acclimatized to our part of Georgia,” said co-coordinator Dave Langhoff. “And we’ll have volunteers on hand to answer questions about planting and gardening. If you are in a new home, our sale is an economical way to establish a lush yard, which adds value to your home.”
Funds from the MGEV plant sale support UGA Extension-Coweta County community education programs and fund agriculture scholarships and Coweta 4-H.
