Sandy Creek High School senior Ellie Klarl was crowned Miss Sandy Creek 2015 during the Miss Sandy Creek Scholarship Pageant on Jan. 31.
In addition to winning the title, Ellie was named Most Photogenic and received recognition for the most program ads sold, the most community service hours performed, and the highest grade point average.
In the talent session, Ellie performed a self-choreographed modern dance that featured acrobatic poses.
She received $2,400 in scholarship awards and is now eligible to compete in the Miss Georgia pageant in June.
Thirteen girls vied for the title in the annual pageant that featured three new components this year — talent, business wear presentation, and a written essay. Those three areas were scored by judges as well the traditional formal wear presentation and interview.
Also new this year was the awarding of $5,300 in scholarships, more than presented at any previous Miss Sandy Creek pageant.
Kasey Melkonian was the first runner-up and was awarded with a $1,500 scholarship. Cydney Braumuller, who was named second runner-up and Miss Congeniality, earned a $1,000 reward.
Others in the top five were junior Sydney Corbin and freshman Brianna Powers, who also won a $400 scholarship for the best essay.
Junior Ashlynn Long won the People’s Choice award.
The show also featured a men’s formalwear presentation, with tuxedos donated by Celebrate Tuxedos.
The pageant was judged by Ahmad Jamal Lewis, Marketing and Advertising Manager for the Coles College of Business at Kennesaw State University; Elizabeth Buckalew, a senior at the University of Georgia and Miss Cherokee Rose 2015; and Abby Feltner, the reigning Miss Georgia Outstanding Teen as well as Miss Starrs Mill 2014.
Directed by Jan Davenport, the pageant is the largest fundraiser for the SCHS choral program and helps fund the annual spring musical. “Cinderella,” this year’s presentation, will be presented Apr. 24–26 at SCHS.
