Each year the Metro Fayette Kiwanis Club honors an outstanding student from each fifth grade.
They are chosen by the fifth grade teachers and the principal at each school. Consideration does not depend on grades, but on the progress made by the student from the beginning of the year to the end of the school year.

This year  newly elected judge of the Fayette County State Court, Jason Thompson, was the speaker.
He spoke to the 16 students receiving the honor and told them “You have applied your best effort to reach a higher goal for yourself. The growth you have achieved this year in the fifth grade is the stepping stone that will help you be successful as you enter middle school and beyond.

“I want to teach you the secret to becoming successful as you grow up. The secret is to read every night. Good readers and those who work to do their best at both reading and math go to college and they earn twice as much as people who don’t go to college. Your presence here today shows you have proven you can be an excellent student when you work hard and set higher goals for yourself,” Thompson said.
