Men and women alike have a great opportunity to learn some important and specific health information at an upcoming event hosted by ProHealth Physical Therapy and Pilates Studio in Peachtree City.

“Pelvic Power: Where Life Starts and Freedom Begins” is scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, at 6:30 p.m. The cost to attend is $30, or free with the purchase of any Pilates package from ProHealth.

Because every human being has a pelvic floor, this event is beneficial to men as well as women, albeit for different reasons.

“For women, the pelvic floor is affected significantly during childbearing time and again when the body starts to go through menopause,” said ProHealth’s owner, Dr. Karyn Staples, PT, PhD, NCPT. “For men, the greatest effects usually are related to something happening in the prostate area. In either case, the pelvic floor is the foundation, the core.”

This part of the body typically operates fine without us having to think about it. However, a slip and fall that results in you landing on your tailbone can change that in a hurry. A woman can see changes after a vaginal delivery that caused tearing or strain. Even a Cesarean birth can have an impact by altering the abdominal muscles.

One side effect, especially in women, is the dreaded sneeze that is nearly always accompanied by slight involuntary urination. The old joke “I laughed so hard, I peed myself” is not as funny when it continues to happen to you with no cure in sight. Leakage is also known to happen to men once a catheter is removed following a prostate procedure.

“It’s never normal to leak urine or anything from the bowels,” said Staples. “If that happens, something within this inner unit is not coordinating and working well.”

The goal of this workshop is to educate attendees on how the pelvic floor should work and whether theirs is doing so the right way. If not, a visit to a physical therapist or a doctor might be in order.

As with many other aspects of life that require physical therapy, ProHealth professionals are always looking for clues in one’s posture and breathing that could be having a negative impact on body function. The pelvic floor is no exception.

Attendees will benefit from seeing anatomical models that can show them the proper alignment and movement. Different positioning of their own bodies during the exercise will give them some insight into their specific situations. Those who suffer from unwanted leakage often learn that a short series of targeted physical therapy sessions can make them completely continent.

“We are providing the best quality of care at ProHealth for those with pelvic health dysfunction,” said Staples, who has a quarter-century of experience herself and has two other members of her staff with the qualifications to provide treatment in this area.
For those who cannot attend “Pelvic Power” in person, a virtual option is available. Whichever you choose, reserve your space today. Stop by the front desk at ProHealth, 1777 Georgian Park in Peachtree City, or phone 770-487-1931. Visit prohealthga.com for more information.
