Elizabeth “Betsy” Getreu, beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend passed away at her home surrounded by family on December 12, 2023. She was 68.

Betsy was born to Selena and Harold Taliaferro in Hammond, Indiana, where she was valedictorian of Hammond High School. She attended Butler University and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio after completing her degree.

At 25, she married her lifelong love, John, and moved to Dallas, Texas, where they later welcomed their son, Thomas. They moved to Hickory, North Carolina and welcomed their daughter, Emily, before finally settling in Peachtree City in 1994.

Betsy could always be found singing her favorite tunes, tinkering with computers, or reading her favorite Jane Austen novel. She volunteered her time endlessly to help the public school system.

Betsy loved cheering on the Purdue Boilermakers and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. As her children’s biggest cheerleader, she offered her unwavering support as they pursued their passions and interests. She will be remembered for her overwhelming generosity, kindness, and quick wit.

She is survived by her husband, John Getreu; her children, Thomas (Ashley) Getreu and Emily (Sam) Stachura; her grandchildren, Carson Getreu, Cameran Getreu, Isla Stachura, and Audra Stachura; her brother, Richard (Marsha) Taliaferro and sister, Jean (John) Hoffner; her sisters-in-law, Linda (Doug) Hawley and Lou Ann Downey; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom she loved deeply. She was preceded in death by her parents.

The family will host Betsy’s Celebration of Life on January 20, 2024, 1-4 PM at The Loft at Due South 302 Clover Reach, Peachtree City, GA 30269. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Betsy Getreu Memorial Scholarship Fund. Please make checks payable to Fayette County Education Foundation with the memo line reading:
