Peeples performs main idea surgery

The Rockets got hands-on to improve their reading comprehension. Peeples Elementary 3rd grade doctors performed main idea surgery to better understand written passages.

Finding the main idea and supporting details of a passage is a 3rd grade standard that is often difficult for students, and teachers wanted to find a way to make the lesson more engaging. Students were promoted to doctors where they worked in pairs, read a patient’s file, and had to find the main idea and supporting details. Teachers were thrilled to see how engaged they were performing main idea surgery, and it is a skill they will keep polishing throughout the year.
