Giddy up! Braelinn class saddles up for Cowboy Day

It wasn’t quite the wild, wild west, but one lucky class was “Home on the Range” at Braelinn Elementary. Braelinn 5th grade students saddled up for Cowboy Day as the culminating event for their Turn of the Century unit.

Their learning unit focused on how life changed in America at the turn of the century (the role of cattle trails, the Black Cowboys of Texas, the Great Western Cattle Trail, and the Chisholm Trail), important places, and the economic concepts of trade and how price incentives affected behavior and choices (like participation in cattle trails because of increased beef prices).

As part of Cowboy Day, students ate similar foods to what they would have had on the trail, like biscuits, water, popcorn, and chicken nuggets. They also played cowboy-themed games like horseshoes, snake in the boot, and lassoing cows.
