With GHSA postseason play looming, here is a roundup of local varsity softball teams so far according to MaxPreps.
East Coweta has been unstoppable so far this season, with a perfect 25-0 record. In five Region 2-AAAAAAA wins, the team has scored 57 runs and given up zero.
Given those numbers, it’s no surprise that East Coweta is ranked first in the state in its classification. What makes the immediate postseason more interesting is the fact that cross-county rival Newnan, at 20-2 and 4-1, has been ranked as high as second in the state.
As of the end of last week, Whitewater was the leader in Region 3-AAAAA with a 13-1 mark and a 20-4 record overall. Starr’s Mill ranked second in the region at 19-5 and 11-1, while McIntosh’s 7-6 region record was good enough for third (11-12 overall). Fayette County’s record was 4-8 overall and 4-7 in the region, in fifth place behind Griffin.
Whitewater and Starr’s Mill have both cracked the top ten in various state rankings at different times this season. As of the weekend, Whitewater had won five in a row and Starr’s Mill had won eight straight.
Northgate finished last week 11-9 overall and 5-1 in Region 5-AAAAAA play, good enough for second place behind Alexander.
Sandy Creek has amassed a 10-14 record but won only one out of 12 games in Region 5-AAAA.
In Region 5-A, Landmark came in at 5-1 (fourth behind Wesleyan, ELCA and Strong Rock) with a 16-7 overall mark.
The state playoffs begin next week with the first round set for Oct. 13-14 and the second round on tap Oct. 18-19. Each of the first two rounds is a best-of-three series with the higher seed serving as the host team.
The state championship tournament is Oct. 26-28 in Columbus.
