Mercedes Adel Alcebo Gil, known and loved by many as “Tuty” or “Mima”, went peacefully to be with her Savior on July 16, 2017. She was born August 30, 1936 in Varadero, Cuba to Pedro and Wilma Alcebo. She attended the American Dominican Academy, Cuba.
She later came to the United States and married Larry F. Gil in 1961. She was happily married for 53 years. Mercedes worked as a switchboard operator, a legal assistant, and translator.
However, her biggest success was being an amazing mother to her children and “Mima” to her grandchildren. Our kind and generous mother was loved by many. Mrs. Gil was a long standing member of St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church and later at St. Gabriel. She resided in Fayetteville, Ga. for over 40 years.
Mercedes is preceded in death by her husband Larry F. Gil. She is survived by her children, Frances and her husband, Patrick Vaughn of Stuart, Fla.; Larry Gil and his wife, Kim, of Savannah, Ga.; Susan and her husband, Dave Grathwohl of Salisbury, N.C.; Sophie Hampton of Cumming, Ga.; and Karen and her husband, Ron Smith, of Fayetteville, Ga. Her grandchildren Zach, Jillian, Natalie, Allison, Maggie, Abby, Brandon, Nelson, Morgan, Emma, Leah, and Sarah also survive her. She is survived by her sisters Janet Leon and Pat Lamb, as well as many more nieces, nephews & cousins.
She loved her family and was adored by them all. Her other love… was the beach. Over the past 30 years, she enjoyed vacationing in Seagrove Beach with all of her family and friends.
The funeral service will take place Saturday, August 5th, 2017 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Fayetteville, Ga. Visitation will be at 12:30 p.m., Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to Samaritan’s Purse (samaritanspurse.org) or St. Vincent de Paul (svdpgeorgia.org).
