The Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 11, according to a recent report.

The event “will unite family and friends around the globe in lighting candles for one hour to honor the memories of the sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, and grandchildren who left too soon.”

Candles are to be lit at 7 p.m. local time.

The tradition started in the United States in 1997 as a small Internet observance, but has since swelled in numbers “as word has spread throughout the world of the remembrance of children who have died, but will never be forgotten,” according to a statement.

The Compassionate Friends of Central Georgia invites families in surrounding communities to participate between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. at Griffin Center Point Church, 1427 US Highway 19/41 in Griffin.
