A gas line rupture at the site of the replacement Chick-fil-A on Ga. Highway 54 near Peachtree Parkway on May 17 caused road closures and traffic back-ups for most of the morning.
The closure came at approximately 9:25 a.m. after the contractor working on the site of the replacement Chick-fil-A at the Peachtree Crossing retail center hit a gas line, said Peachtree City Fire Department spokesman Ron Mundy.
Mundy said the contractor using a bucket to dig at the site hit a gas service line nearly two inches in diameter. It was originally thought that the rupture was to a 6-8-inch main line, he said.
Peachtree City police and fire officials closed off the area of Hwy. 54 between Peachtree Parkway to the west and Stevens Entry to the east. The roadway was re-opened a few minutes after noon, Mundy said.
Mundy said the service line was patched earlier than had initially expected, with police earlier in the morning saying it could have been later in the day until it was discovered that a service line, rather than a main line, had been ruptured.
The initial patch was followed by a permanent repair, Mundy said.
Asked about the responsibility for the rupture, Mundy said that determination will be between Atlanta Gas Light, the contractor and the utility marking-service company.
Mundy noted that, while different for residential and commercial areas, cut-off valves are customarily located strategically along gas lines.
