The re-dedication ceremony for the Veterans Memorial in Fayetteville as been rescheduled for Saturday, Nov. 14, at 9 a.m. The event is free and the public is invited. The color guard and other ceremonial support will be provided by Georgia Military College and the 1196th Marine Corps League.
The Veterans Memorial is located in the center of the eight-acre Memorial Patriot Park at 1100-1102 Redwine Road in Fayetteville.
Originally dedicated in November 2013, the Veterans Memorial was built to honor more than 400 Fayette County residents who served in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard, and paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. Prior to the ceremony, the names of these fallen heroes will be read.
Ed Johnson, Fayetteville’s mayor-elect, will serve as master of ceremonies. Special guest speakers include Fayetteville Mayor Greg Clifton, state Rep. John Yates, Gen. Rock Donahue (U.S. Army, retired), and and former Fayetteville City Councilman Larry Dell.
Patriot Guard Riders will travel down Redwine Road and the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation will do a flyover with a UH-1H “Huey” and an AH-1F Cobra.
The goal of the re-dedication ceremony is to increase awareness in the community of the Veterans Memorial as a fitting site for celebrations and activities by veterans groups and other civic organizations. Fayette County residents are already using the park’s walking/jogging trails and picnic areas. Now, with the garden complementing the memorial, residents have a beautiful and peaceful place to visit and reflect about the service members who gave their lives for this country.
