The Peachtree City Falcon Field Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is hosting an open house Thursday, today from 7-8:30 p.m. at Peachtree City United Methodist Church, 225 Robinson Road. According to Lt. Col. David Mitchell, squadron commander, the entire community is welcome to attend and learn more about CAP. Members of the squadron will be present to greet visitors and explain CAP’s new status about missions and being part of the “Total Force” of the United States Air Force. The open house is designed to create a greater awareness of CAP’s presence and contributions in the community such as emergency services, cadet programs, aerospace education, and to invite citizens ages 12 and up to have an opportunity to be a part of serving our community, county, state and country. Learn about native plants that were historically significant to the Cherokee people from a native plant expert at a free program today at the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society’s McRitchie-Hollis Museum. The program is being presented to help mark Native American Heritage Month. Tony Harris, a Cherokee Nation citizen, will discuss ethnobotany: the scientific study of the traditional knowledge and customs of a people concerning plants and their medical, religious, and other uses. The talk will be held at 7 p.m.

The Sgt. Clyde Thomason Medal of Honor Detachment #1325 of the Marine Corps League is hosting its annual United States Marine Corps Birthday Ball today in celebration of the Corps’ 240th birthday.The guest speaker will be best-selling author and hero physician Dr. Richard Jadick, who was an officer with the Marine Corps for six years prior to attending medical school. In the spring of 2004, at age 38, Jadick, now a doctor with the United States Navy, volunteered to go to Iraq with the Marines. He deployed five days after the birth of his daughter. The Marine Corps Birthday celebration will be at Peachtree City’s Flat Creek Country Club. Cocktails and hor d’oeuvres will be offered between 6-7 p.m. The ceremony and dinner will begin at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person and include a choice of entrees, two sides, and dessert.This year the Detachment, which boasts some 90 members, has donated $10,000 to several charities, including: The Marine Corps Foundation, Healing 4 Heroes, The Semper Fi Fund, The Fisher House, Toys for Tots, and the Shepherd Center Share Initiative. The Detachment is also involved assisting homeless veterans and working with the veterans Administration.Although Marines are welcome, one does not have to be a Marine or Marine veteran to attend the celebration. The Fayette County Public Library invites the community to a book signing by former Fayette County resident Lucy Morgan Waller today at 11 a.m. Waller will talk about her novel, “Follow the Setting Sun,” a work of adult historical fiction set during early Colonial times in Georgia. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the event, with proceeds benefiting the Friends of the Fayette County Public Library. The program is free and open to the public. The Fayette County Public Library will host Atlanta architect, artist and author Oscar Harris at 1 p.m. for a talk and book signing. The Centre for Performing & Visual Arts, 1523 Lower Fayetteville Road in Newnan, hosts The United States Army Band & Soldier’s Chorus for a complimentary concert today at 3 p.m. The Army Field Band has been thrilling audiences of all ages for more than six decades. Col. Ben Malcom assumed command of a battalion which was part of a top secret Special Forces/CIA unit in Seoul, South Korea in January of 1952, though he was only a first lieutenant at the time. He was responsible for training and leading 800 North Korean guerrillas. Their battalion became known as the “White Tigers” and their operation was classified for 40 years. Malcom will be on hand to tell stories about this dangerous and complicated mission at an upcoming meeting of the Fayette County Historical Society scheduled for Sunday, today at 3 p.m. at the Margaret Mitchell Research Center, 195 Lee Street in Fayetteville.

Charles Andrews will be the speaker today at the Fayette Master Gardener Association meeting at 11 a.m. at the Bridge in Peachtree City. Andrews’ knowledge of plants is self-taught, with over 40 years of study and digging in the dirt. He is president of the Azalea Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society and a
member of the Azalea Society of America. The public is invited to this free event.

State Rep. Ronnie Mabra of District 63 will again be giving away more than 1,000 turkeys to families in need in the days before Thanksgiving.The fourth annual Mabra Turkey Giveaway is scheduled for today from, 9–11 a.m. at 5495 Old National Highway in the Grown Folks Plaza. Since its inception in 2012, the event has provided more than 4,000 free turkeys to families in need, according to Mabra. Harry Norman Realtors will present the Fayette Humane Society Christmas Tour of Homes showcasing six homes in the county today from 1-5 p.m. Tickets are $30 and available at the Harry Norman Realtor office, 120 Peachtree East Shopping Center in Peachtree City. The homes to be showcased are located in six different subdivisions in the area, including Golfview, Smokerise Crossing, Meadowlark Trace, The Gates, Pleasance Grove, and Bradford Estates. All proceeds will go to providing food, shelter and medical attention for the animals in the care of the Fayette Humane Society.
