Get ready for a full day of activities in downtown Newnan on July 4. The day will begin with the annual parade and be followed by Market Day, Pickin’ on the Square and the annual fireworks at Drake Field.

Main Street Newnan kicks off Newnan’s Independence Day activities with the 4th of July Parade that will begin at 9 a.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Park and end at Greenville Street Park, said city spokesperson Gina Snider.

Following the July 4th parade, the monthly Market Day event on the square downtown will be hosted from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

“We encourage all visitors to browse through the market after the parade to see what unique specialty items our local artisans, artists, and farmers have to sell,” Snider said. “The Main Street Newnan Market features handmade, homemade and homegrown products, with new vendors and new products each month. And the market will feature over 50 unique spaces with a variety of one-of-a-kind gift items.”

Pickin’ on the Square will begin at 11 a.m. on July 4 around the courthouse square.

“Here you can expect to enjoy the vernacular sounds of local musicians playing acoustic music around the Court House Lawn,” said Snider. “We invite any musician with an acoustic instrument to join.”

The Newnan Rotary club will also host the 30th annual local Independence Day festivities on the evening of July 4th at Newnan High School’s Drake Stadium, which is located less than a mile away from downtown Newnan. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will consist of patriotic festivities, food, children’s activities, entertainment and the fireworks display.

Since 1987, the event has been led by the Newnan Rotary Club which has partnered with the City of Newnan, Coweta County, Coweta County Schools and local businesses of Coweta County as a gift to the whole community.

There is plenty of room in and around Drake Stadium for families. Parking on the campus is limited, and attendees are encouraged to arrive early or even park in downtown Newnan and walk to the high school stadium for ease of parking and traffic control.

Opportunities will also be available for everyone to donate to the CART Fund. The purpose of the CART Fund (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust) is to collect and provide dollars for leading edge research for the cure/prevention of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It started in 1996 with Rotarians voluntarily emptying their pockets and purses of change at weekly meetings.
