Chess enthusiasts aren’t likely to find a “patzer” in Fayette County’s new tournament even though it is open to all ages and players of all skill levels.
The new tournament is the brainchild of Inman Elementary School teacher and school Chess Club sponsor Charlie Harper, who is no patzer, as poor players are called in chess terminology.
The tournament will take place Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Inman.
Harper came up with the idea of having a Fayette County tournament to provide local players with a competition closer to home and to also generate some funds to help support the Chess Club, which is in its second year. The closest tournaments are in Clayton and Coweta counties right now.
Registration is $12 per person on the day of the tournament, or $10 per person by pre-registering online at http://tinyurl.com/inmanchessform. The fee includes two slices of pizza and a drink. Payments of either cash or check will be collected at the door. No credit or debit cards accepted. Registration ends at 9:45 a.m. on Feb. 28.
The tournament is open to players of any age, skill-level, and county of residence. All players will participate in five rounds of competition regardless of performance.
Game clocks will be used with rounds lasting 40 minutes with no delay.
