Repair crews on Dec. 23 responding to a service disruption alert at a vacant building near the Fayette Pavilion found that thieves had stolen 800 feet of copper wire.

Fayetteville Det. Mike Whitlow said the theft is believed to have occurred on Dec. 18 though it was not reported until Coweta-Fayette EMC crews arrived at the vacant Promenade Parkway building in response to a service disruption alert.

Crews arrived and found the junction box damaged and wires missing, Whitlow said, adding that the fuses had been disabled and eight 100-foot copper wires had been pulled from the lines.

Whitlow said that for the amount of copper pulled it is likely that the thieves had a spool on a trailer to wrap the large amount of wire.

Whitlow said evidence was recovered at the scene and investigators are reviewing surveillance video from the area.

Anyone with information pertaining to this crime is asked to contact the Fayetteville Police Dept. at 770-461-4441.

Whitlow said copper thefts continue to be a common problem nationwide.
