The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension specialists will present a green industry update today from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Kiwanis Center at the Fayette County Parks and Recreation Center on Redwine Road in Fayetteville. Topics at the Fayette County class will center around new and emerging pests in ornamentals, an update on perennials and herbicides for use in nurseries and the landscape industry.
Participants in the class will qualify for three hours of commercial pesticide credit in either category 24 or 35, three hour of ISA Arborist credit and one hour of private pesticide credit. The Senoia Area Historical Society announces the opening of Postmarked: a collection of nineteen vintage postcards that have been mailed to or from Senoia. A reception open to the public is today at 7 p.m. at the museum located at 6 Couch Street, Senoia. Light refreshments will be served.The cards contain handwritten messages and postal cancellations with dates starting from 1892. Most cards date from the early 1900s, some are vintage Valentines, and some showcase homes and churches in Senoia. There’s one of the Prescription Department of Hollberg’s Pharmacy from 1912, one of the A.B.&A Depot sent to Miss Clevie Stewart in 1910, and two from the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair sent to the Sullivans of Senoia. The Methodist Church is portrayed on two cards, while the rarest card may well be the Presbyterian Church which was located on Pylant Street and is now a private residence. The most recent postcard was sent in 1982 to Bill and Nancy Roy announcing the opening of the Cricket House on Seavy Street.

The Griffin Wine Society hosts a Georgia wine tasting today with wines from the Republic of Georgia that are new to the Atlanta metro market.
The event takes place from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, in the Bank Street Café, 126 South Hill Street, in downtown Griffin. Admission is $20 for members, $25 for non-members. Prices include hors d’oeuvres and samples of seven red and white Tsinandali Old Cellars “Old Marani” wines. RSVP to 770-229-2071 by August 16. Although the names of the three white and four red wines Irakli Samkharadze’s family winery produces in the Caucasus Mountains are unfamiliar, they won gold and silver medals in European competitions. Vinted in modern European styles, the tastes are reminiscent of Sicilian, French Languedoc and Greek wines. “Old Marani” Rkatsiteli, Tivishi and Mtsvani, are the white wines. Saperavi, Kindzmarauli, Mukuzani and Kvanchkara are produced from single varietal and blended red grapes. The event also offers two California wines, Indian Valley Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and Black Goose Late Harvest Chardonnay. Wine tastings hosted by the Griffin Wine Society provide guests with the opportunity to drink wines without having to purchase a full bottle. The group, metro Atlanta’s oldest, hosts monthly wine tastings, dinners and other events at venues in Spalding, Fayette and in neighboring counties designed to allow participants to sample and learn about wines they have never before tried.

Peachtree City has rescheduled the rained-out fireworks display scheduled for July 4 to tonight, over Lake Peachtree. Due to the earlier sunset in August, the fireworks will be launched at 8:30 p.m. The event will kick off the Labor Day weekend for the community.
