• Fayette resident Carol A. Lunsford accepted leadership of Georgia’s unit of National Kappa Kappa Iota, Inc. while attending the National Convention in Omaha, Nebraska. Over 250 members and guests attended the convention June 25-29, 2013 presided over by National President, Christena Poole of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Lunsford was installed as president of Lambda State (Georgia) during formal ceremonies June 28.
Kappa Kappa Iota, founded in Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1921, is the nation’s oldest organization for educators. The organization provides a network for outstanding educators to share teaching practices and methods, this year more than 3,200 members nationwide have contributed $970,599.30 and volunteered 143,891 hours of service to local and national charities, which support battered adults and children. Eight different scholarships and grants were awarded.
• Lauren Catherine Phillips, daughter of Chris and Diana Phillips of Peachtree City, a 2012 graduate of Starr’s Mill High School, has been named to the President’s List for the 2013 spring semester at Elon University.
The President’s List is composed of students who had no grade below an A-minus in a minimum of 12 semester hours. Elon University is recognized as a national model for engaged learning with renowned programs in international study and community service. Elon emphasizes an excellent foundation in liberal arts and sciences along with nationally accredited professional programs in the schools of law, business, communications, education and health sciences.
Elon’s 6,000 students come to North Carolina from 48 states and 48 other nations.
• Clayton State University recently awarded Master’s degrees to seven residents of Fayette County.
The degrees included MBA (Master of Business Administration), MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching English), and MHA (Master of Health Administration) degrees.
Daniel Lawrence Smoak of Fayetteville, Ryan Koreen Strader of Peachtree City, Esther Lela-Stegall Goss of Fayetteville, Will Knudson of Peachtree City, Yolanda A. Malone-Gilbert of Peachtree City, Jaymz Ryms of Tyrone and Jody Sean Roberts were awarded the advanced degrees.
• Matthew Ross Darnowski of Peachtree City was named to the president’s list at Mississippi State University for the spring 2013 sememster. This is the second time that he has been named to this list. In order to be on the president’s list at Mississippi State University, you must maintain a gpa of 3.8 or higher.
• Trevor A. Mercer has been awarded an Air Force ROTC scholarship to attend a host college or university. High school seniors from across the United States are selected after a competitive application process based on comprehensive tests scores, scholastic achievement, school officials’ evaluations, extra-curricular activities, and community involvement.
The majority of scholarships cover full college tuition, provide a textbook allowance and pay most laboratory or incidental fees. The scholarship program also pays a $350 tax-free monthly allowance to each student during the academic year, which increases to $500 by his or her senior year. The value of a scholarship may exceed $100,000, depending on the student’s choice of school and the type of scholarship offered.
Upon graduating from college and completing the ROTC program, the cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Air Force. The new lieutenants select and enter various career fields to train as pilots, navigators, engineers, medical, personnel, business management fields, and special operations.
He is the son of Todd and Shawnee Mercer of Flat Creek Trail, and Ted and Phyllis Davis of Flat Creek Trail, all of Fayetteville. He is also the grandson of Peggy Mercer of Jenny Road, Grantville.
• Local residents have been named to the Dean’s List at the Savannah College of Art and Design for spring quarter 2013. • Anika Cooper of was named to the Honor List of Oxford College, the two-year liberal arts division of Emory University located in Oxford, Ga., for the 2013 spring semester.
Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher to be named to the Honor List.
