Providence United Methodist Church will host its annual Marketplace event, giving local residents a taste of life in biblical times, this Thursday, March 22 (6 – 9 p.m.), Friday, March 23 (6 – 10 p.m.) and Saturday, March 24 (4 -10 p.m.)  at the church on Bernhard Road.

“We’re very excited to welcome Fayette and Coweta county to the fourth annual Marketplace and hope everyone will come out to see what’s new at this year’s event,” said Providence’s senior pastor Warren Huddleston. “We’ve extended the hours this year since people told us last year they didn’t have time to finish all the activities — some even came back a second day last year!”

The Jubilee Community Garden is a new addition this year. Middle high minister Jono Moehlig explains, “Hope, in the form of food, will be growing in our community garden, which is open to everyone. Our middle and senior high students will grow food in four plots and we’ll deliver those fresh fruits and vegetables to the Real Life Center and Fayette Samaritans to give to those in need. Anyone who wants to grow fruit and vegetables for their own family can reserve a plot.”Wayne, Sophia and Jacob Cochran stand by the city gate at Providence UMC’s “Marketplace.” Photo/Special.

There will be several new artistic groups this year as well: actors from the Soaring Eagles homeschool group will present two short dramas, there will be recorder and string choirs, children’s choirs and adult choir in addition to the minstrels presenting new short dramas and comedies.

A set stage area with sound and lighting will be in front of the front lobby of the church,

“Since we have camel rides and the climbing wall in that area, it’s a great place for lots of people to be entertained,” added adult choir director, Dianne DeVane.

Children have many crafts and activities they can choose from — old favorites like pottery and jewelry-making and new things like ancient knitting and game-making.

Children’s minister Cathy Fralish says, “We’re planning for lots of children so we hope everyone will come out to the Marketplace for a couple hours of fun and learning about life in biblical days. Everything is free — including real camel rides, smoked chicken, cookies, and all the crafts and activities.”
