Fayette man accused of shaking infant, causing brain injuries

A north Fayette man remained in jail Thursday night, accused of shaking a 9-week-old infant, causing multiple injuries Feb. 4, The Citizen has learned.

Jamal Thomas, 20, of 210 North Fayette Drive, Fayetteville, is charged with one felony count of cruelty to children in the first degree.

Investigators aren’t releasing details on the case, but the arrest warrant filed in the case provides some information about the extent of the child’s injuries.

The warrant states that Thomas shook the child multiple times, “causing subdural hematomas bilaterally and ischemic injury to the brain.”

The warrant also states that Thomas struck the baby’s head on a door frame, causing an injury and visible bruising to the infant’s right forehead.

The incident took place at Thomas’ residence, according to the warrant. It is unknown if Thomas is related to the baby.

Fayette County Magistrate James A. White declined to set a bond for Thomas, which means he will remain in jail for at least the time being.
