USA Today announced the Best Small Towns from the Best of the Road Rally. Although Peachtree City put on a great show, Rapid City, South Dakota, won the coveted “Most Patriotic” designation. Peachtree City faced some tough competition and shares “Most Patriotic Runner-Up” honors with Clarksville, Tennessee; Emporia, Kansas; Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; and Williamsburg, Virginia. National Night Out is August 2 at Kedron Center
The Peachtree City Police Department is hosting National Night Out, a crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, on Tuesday, August 2, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Numerous public safety agencies have committed their assets for the event, including Fire Department ladder trucks, helicopters, police vehicles, and various other public safety equipment. Children can also compete in a scavenger hunt for prizes donated by the merchants at the center. For more information on this event and how you can participate, please contact Lt. Mark

Traffic Advisories – Crabapple Road, North Hill

Crabapple Lane CLOSED Wednesday & Thursday, July 27 & 28. Peachtree City will be installing a new sewer and storm drain across Crabapple Road at Fire Station 84, west of the intersection of Highway 74 and Crabapple Lane/Peachtree Parkway. The COMPLETE closure of Crabapple Lane is planned for Wednesday, July 27, and Thursday, July 28, with the roadway reopening on Friday, July 29. . Motorists will need to use alternate routes to access any location on Crabapple Road and west of Fire Station 84. Crabapple Road is accessible from Senoia Road at Highway 74 and Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home.

North Hill CLOSED Friday, July 29. Due to the weather forecast, North Hill on Peachtree Parkway North will be CLOSED to both auto and path traffic on Friday, July 29, for resealing.

Facilities Authority Meets August 4
The Peachtree City Public Facilities Authority will meet just prior to the City Council Meeting on Thursday, August 4, 6:30 p.m., at City Hall to consider a Bond Resolution for the Series 2011 Revenue Bond for citywide capital improvements and refinancing of existing debt.

City Items for Auction at Govdeals.com and Adesa.com/Atlanta
Peachtree City will accept bids on www.Govdeals.com for various items, including cameras, a camera bag, a printer, VHS and VCR players, a typewriter, various office equipment and multiple televisions. Items at www.adesa.com/Atlanta include nine Crown Victoria Pursuit vehicles, one Ford Taurus, one GEM, radios, two fuel pumps, one Petro vend tower and various partitions used in Crown Vic Pursuit cars. The auctions are underway and will continue through approximately August 5.

Millage Rate to be set at August 18 Council Meeting
The Mayor and Council will meet on Thursday, August 18, and establish the Ad Valorem Tax Millage rate for 2011. The proposed rate is the same as the 2010 millage rate, 6.783 mils. The meeting will be held at 7:00 P.M. in Council Chambers, 151 Willowbend Road. The public is welcome.

Job Fair on August 22
Congressman Lynn Westmoreland will host a District 3 Job Fair on Monday, August 22, 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., at the Coweta County Fair Grounds (275 Pine Road, Newnan). Representatives from various businesses in the 3rd District, including manufacturing, small businesses, and more, will attend. Shakerag Arts & Crafts Festival is September 17 & 18
Mark your calendars now for the 34th annual Shakerag Arts & Crafts Festival in September. There are still a few vendor slots left specifically for vendors who sell jams and jellies or live plants or flowers suitable for indoor or outdoor planting. The Peachtree City Police Department recently sent out safety alerts on ways to protect yourself. Project Updates:

Library Lower Level Entrance CLOSED for Repairs – The lower level entrance to the PTC Library remains closed due to cracks in the masonry. The area has been barricaded for safety reasons until repairs are completed. Please use the main entrance to the Library upstairs until further notice.

Rite Aid /Whitlock Ellis Entrance from Peachtree Parkway will have intermittent CLOSURES during construction of the Walgreens at Hwy 54 and Peachtree Parkway. Access from Hwy 54 will remain open. Path access via the Walgreens site was open for the July 4 weekend but will require additional closures until construction is complete. Even when open, this is a construction area – drive slowly and remain alert when using this entrance.

Lake McIntosh – Fayette County reports that the Lake McIntosh dam construction continues on schedule for a completion by December 2011 (note date correction), after which the lake can begin filling. The time to fill is estimated to be about one year, but depends on the amount rain and the amount of water withdrawn for treatment during filling.

Highway 74 South Sound Wall Landscaping – The City has received a grant for this project, but will be required to dedicate matching funds. This will be discussed as part of the FY 2012 budget preparation.

Development Authority of Peachtree City Special Called Meeting – Wednesday, July 27, 6:30 p.m., at City Hall. The public is welcome, and a quorum of the Peachtree City Mayor & Council may be in attendance.

Clinic for Women Veterans – Wednesday, July 27, at the Veterans Club, 130 Veterans Club Drive, in Newnan. Dinner at 7:00 p.m. (RSVP to Kathy Shiver, 404-924-0878, or Hanna Mercier, 678-850-6818), program at 7:30 p.m. Topics include VA benefits for women, filing claims, and info on suicide among veterans. If applying for VA medical assistance, bring copy of discharge certificate (DD 214) and private medical insurance.
