There are good ideas and then there are great ideas. Zara Morgan, 7, of Peachtree City had a great idea when she heard some of the parents at her sister’s morning swimming practices wishing they had a cup of coffee. If she set up a coffee stand and sold coffee and muffins, the parents needing a little morning pick me up would probably buy something.
Zara’s mother, Terry, wondered what her daughter was planning on doing with the money she raised and was blown away when she said she was going to send it to her friend, Hannah Heilman, who is on a four-year mission trip with her family in Cambodia.
The stand, Muffins for Missions and Coffee for Cambodia, went up outside the swim practice at the Planterra Ridge pool last Monday. Thanks to some donations along with a hefty number of sales, Zara was able to raise $300 to send to her friend.
Each morning, Zara would wake up her mother to bake the fresh muffins. They made 12 dozen during the week in flavors ranging from blueberry and strawberry to banana, apple cinnamon and pumpkin chocolate chip.
Mom did the measuring of the ingredients and the work with the oven, but Zara chose the recipes, poured the ingredients into the bowl and did the mixing and put the paper in the pan. Zara’s sister, Monse, served as the cashier and organizer for the project. Both Zara and Monse are Girl Scouts (Zara is a Brownie) and can use their work with the project as part of their service hours.
“I’m really proud of Zara,” Terry said. “I thought she’d want to spend the money, but she told me right away, ‘I want to send it to my BFF (best friend forever) in Cambodia.’”
The muffin and coffee stand was only a one week thing. Zara has camp to attend and Mom stated she was done with the 6:30 a.m. wake up calls.
“She’ll be my little CEO millionaire,” Terry said of Zara and her entrepreneurial spirit. Zara, crafty saleswoman in training, aided her chances of good publicity by giving this reporter a pumpkin chocolate chip muffin on the house. (It was delicious).
