Update: The Marketplace will not be open Saturday due to the threat of rain. The event will be held Sunday from 5-8 p.m., weather permitting.

It is one thing to talk about or reflect on what life in a city like ancient Jerusalem might have looked like. It’s another thing to visit it for yourself. And that is what is available through Saturday at Providence United Methodist Church. The Marketplace is unlike any large working exhibit that most area residents will ever see.

The Marketplace at Providence UMC each year attracts several thousand to visit the shops and artisans found in a replica of Jerusalem in the time of Christ. With many of the exhibits interactive, visitors can learn to weave baskets and make jewelry or crush grain or grapes and learn to write ancient Hebrew. Church members also dress in traditional clothing from that era and are joined by Roman soldiers throughout the Marketplace.

The venue will also feature things like pottery-making, a stable, archery, carpentry and camel rides.

The Marketplace is open tonight from 6-9 p.m. and will be open again on Saturday from 4-9 p.m. Providence UMC is located at 592 Bernhard Road near Peachtree City.
