The Greater Fayette Republican Women’s Club is pleased to host guest speaker Mark Rountree, president of Landmark Communications, at our upcoming monthly meeting today at Tim’s Country Kitchen in Fayetteville. The Senoia Historical Society is scheduled to meet today at 7 p.m. at the Senoia Historical Society Museum, 6 Couch Street in Senoia.Members and guests will be treated to visits from two famous literary figures from Coweta County’s past. Carol Chancey, director of the Moreland Community Historical Society (and supporter of storytelling and of the Southern Crescent Storytellers), will be speaking to members and guests, introducing many for the first time to the museums honoring Lewis Grizzard and Erskine Caldwell, and offering an introduction to the lives of these men. Neal Peeples, of Southern Crescent Storytellers, will be channeling columnist and humorist Grizzard while Society member Ralph Arnold will read selections from Caldwell’s powerful Depression era novels. Doors open at 6:30.

The Whitewater Talent Show is today at 7 p.m. at the Whitewater High School auditorium. There will be a middle school and high school division. Tickets are $5 at the door and proceeds benefit the Whitewater High School Choral Department.

Breastfeeding Basics provides information to expectant couples on the benefits of breastfeeding for mother and baby, correct positioning and latch, milk volume expectations and breast pumps. It will also cover what to expect during the early breastfeeding days as well as later returning to work. The class is from 10 a.m.-noon, and is led by Jan Mannion in the Cancer Wellness Activity Room at Piedmont Fayette Hospital, third floor. Fee is $10.

Baby Basics, open to expectant mothers and their spouses or partners, provides information and guidance related to the care of the newborn. Topics discussed include bathing, diapering, burping, feeding, calming techniques for a fussy baby, car safety seats, immunizations, circumcisions, signs of illness and when to call the pediatrician.

Join the Fayette County Historical Society today at 3 p.m. at their headquarters for a clean-up. Annual filing, cleaning and rearranging file drawers. All hands on deck needed to spruce things up.

January 16

A parade and program honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., sponsored by the Fayette County branch of the NAACP, is scheduled for today in Fayetteville.Parade participants line up in the Fayette County High School parking lot between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. Breakfast items will be available for sale at the school beginning at 9 a.m.
The parade begins at 10:30, proceeding from the school down Hood Avenue to Hwy. 85, Hwy. 54 and back to the school. A commemorative program begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Sams Auditorium, 205 Lafayette Drive in Fayetteville. Admission is free.

The Fayette Master Gardener Association invites the public to a free lecture today at 10:30 a.m. at the Peachtree City Library, 201 Willowbend Road in Peachtree City.
The topic is “Do’s and Don’ts for Home Pest Control.”
Teresa Bieriger, Newnan office manager for Active Pest Control, will present and will address controversial issues concerning mosquitos, termites, neo-nicotinoids, vegetable garden design considerations, treatment of pollinators and beneficials, differences in chemicals’ effects on gender, age, pets, fish, birds & wildlife. She will discuss these subjects and their relationships to commercial pest control in and around the home, as well as entertaining Q&A after the presentation.Teresa is a State of Georgia Certified Operator in both Wood Destroying Organisms and Household Pest Control. She also has her Commercial Applicator license for Mosquito Control, and continues her education at the Griffin campus of UGA where she has completed several programs: Urban and Structural Pest Management, Integrated Pest Management Workshop, and the Termite Control Workshop. Friends of the Fayette County Public Library Books Sale is today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The first book sale of the year features over 10,000 books in 24 different categories. Books range in price from 25 cents to 50 cents for most children’s books to $5 for current best sellers. Proceeds from the book sales help support the Summer Reading Program and Wednesday Baby Time for ages 0-3 years as well as numerous other programs. Book donations are accepted at the library anytime. “Smokey Joe’s Cafe” opens its run today at The Legacy Theatre in Tyrone. The show runs Jan. 20-Feb.19 and features such songs as
“Jailhouse Rock”, “Yakety Yak”, “Stand by Me” and more.
Leiber and Stoller, as much as anyone, virtually invented rock ‘n’ roll, and now their songs provide the basis for an electrifying entertainment that illuminates a golden age of American culture. Don’t let the winter stop you from preparing for your spring garden. Joyce Spindler with the Peachtree City Garden Club teaches us the methods to winter sowing, an easy gardening technique that starts seedlings growth in containers that are ready to be planted when spring arrives. Learn the technique and do a hands-on demonstration to winter sowing. You will create and take home your own seedling container.

The Peachtree City Kiwanis’ 26th annual Pancake Breakfast is today from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. in the McIntosh High School Cafeteria.
Enjoy all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, orange juice, milk, coffee, and tea for the price of $8 in advance ($9 at the door. Children under 4 are free. Phenomenal Women’s Health is now accepting registration for its “Loving Me Phenomenally With Endless Possibilities” mentorship program. Girls ages 11-15 are welcome to attend a two month course. A variety of classes are taught on finances, stem, self-esteem, etiquette, bullying, healthy relationships and much more. It takes place at the Fayette County Library starting February 4. The 48th annual Miss Pride of Fayette County pageant, returning to the community after a one-year hiatus, is today at Sams Auditorium in Fayetteville. Applications are now being accepted.
The pageant allows young ladies from ages 3 to 18 who are residents of Fayette County to compete for the titles of Tiny Miss Pride (ages 3-5), Little Miss Pride (grades K-2), Young Miss Pride (grades 3-5), Junior Miss Pride (grades 6-8) and Miss Pride (grades 9-12). Winners will be awarded a crown, custom sash, flowers and the opportunity to represent Fayette County at various charitable and civic events throughout the year.The Miss Pride of Fayette County pageant is a fundraiser for the Fayette County High School Marching Band.
