Oak Grove Elementary, 101 Crosstown Drive in Peachtree City, is inviting armed forces veterans to a breakfast and school assembly in their honor today, which is Veterans Day.The doors open for veterans at 7:45 a.m. to enjoy breakfast. An assembly honoring veterans will commence following breakfast at about 8:15 a.m. All veterans are invited. You do not need a student at Oak Grove to attend.

The Greater Fayette Republican Women’s Club will hold their next meeting at 6 p.m. today at the Fayette Event Center (adjacent to the Fayette County Republican Party Headquarters),174 North Glynn Street, Fayetteville. Following a light supper, guest speaker Janet Moon, Peachtree City chief of police, will discuss community policing. Everyone is encouraged to attend and enjoy our program. Please note that there will be a $5 charge for this meeting. The Teen Childbirth Class is a free class designed to meet the needs of expectant teen moms and their support person. Topics discussed are expectations for labor, pain management during labor, nutrition during and after pregnancy ,postpartum and newborn care, infant car seat safety, breastfeeding and infant CPR. The re-dedication ceremony for the Veterans Memorial in Fayetteville  is today at 9 a.m. The event is free and the public is invited. The color guard and other ceremonial support will be provided by Georgia Military College and the 1196th Marine Corps League. The Veterans Memorial is located in the center of the eight-acre Memorial Patriot Park at 1100-1102 Redwine Road in Fayetteville. Originally dedicated in November 2013, the Veterans Memorial was built to honor more than 400 Fayette County residents who served in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard, and paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. Prior to the ceremony, the names of these fallen heroes will be read.
Ed Johnson, Fayetteville’s mayor-elect, will serve as master of ceremonies. Special guest speakers include Fayetteville Mayor Greg Clifton, state Rep. John Yates, Gen. Rock Donahue (U.S. Army, retired), and and former Fayetteville City Councilman Larry Dell.
 Patriot Guard Riders will travel down Redwine Road and the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation will do a flyover with a UH-1H “Huey” and an AH-1F Cobra. The goal of the re-dedication ceremony is to increase awareness in the community of the Veterans Memorial as a fitting site for celebrations and activities by veterans groups and other civic organizations. Fayette County residents are already using the park’s walking/jogging trails and picnic areas. Now, with the garden complementing the memorial, residents have a beautiful and peaceful place to visit and reflect about the service members who gave their lives for this country.

The Fayette County NAACP’s annual Freedom Fund Banquet is today at The Wyndham Hotel in Peachtree City. The keynote speaker will be Mr. Jason Carter, former gubernatorial candidate and grandson of former President Jimmy Carter. The mistress of ceremonies will be Mrs. Lisa Rayam from Fox5 News. Col. Ben Malcom assumed command of a battalion which was part of a top secret Special Forces/CIA unit in Seoul, South Korea in January of 1952, though he was only a first lieutenant at the time. He was responsible for training and leading 800 North Korean guerrillas. Their battalion became known as the “White Tigers” and their operation was classified for 40 years. Malcom will be on hand to tell stories about this dangerous and complicated mission at an upcoming meeting of the Fayette County Historical Society scheduled for Sunday, today at 3 p.m. at the Fayette County Commission meeting room on Stonewall Avenue- in Fayetteville.

Charles Andrews will be the speaker today at the Fayette Master Gardener Association meeting at 11 a.m. at the Bridge in Peachtree City. Andrews’ knowledge of plants is self-taught, with over 40 years of study and digging in the dirt. He is president of the Azalea Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society and a
member of the Azalea Society of America. The public is invited to this free event.

A “Virtual Dementia Tour” is scheduled for today from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at Fayette Senior Services’ Fayetteville location (The Life Enrichment Center, 4 Center Drive). It’s hard to understand what someone with dementia is going through, but Senior Helpers will help others see into their world for a few short minutes. Quality care begins with family members and caregivers who are sensitive, patient, and kind, but how can we be empathetic when we haven’t experienced it firsthand. The Virtual Dementia Tour has been a proven method to building a greater understanding of dementia through the use of sensory tools that gives us a chance to step into dementia patient’s shoes in a way you never imagined before. State Rep. Ronnie Mabra of District 63 will again be giving away more than 1,000 turkeys to families in need in the days before Thanksgiving.The fourth annual Mabra Turkey Giveaway is scheduled for today from, 9–11 a.m. at 5495 Old National Highway in the Grown Folks Plaza. Since its inception in 2012, the event has provided more than 4,000 free turkeys to families in need, according to Mabra. Volunteers, community leaders and the local art community are coming together to host the ninth annual Chair-ity Event benefiting children who live in the cottages at The Children’s Village at Christian City. Artists are transforming chairs into unique works of art which will be the highlight of the silent auction. A live jazz trio will entertain with renditions of holiday favorites while guests enjoy drinks and culinary creations from the Dolce’s kitchen. Harry Norman Realtors will present the Fayette Humane Society Christmas Tour of Homes showcasing six homes in the county today from 1-5 p.m. Tickets are $30 and available at the Harry Norman Realtor office, 120 Peachtree East Shopping Center in Peachtree City. The homes to be showcased are located in six different subdivisions in the area, including Golfview, Smokerise Crossing, Meadowlark Trace, The Gates, Pleasance Grove, and Bradford Estates. All  proceeds will go to providing food, shelter and medical attention for the animals in the care of the Fayette Humane Society. Local congregations of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will present the third annual Festival of the Nativity Dec. 11-12 at 101 South Peachtree Parkway in Peachtree City.
