Spring Event Celebrates VE Day and the Home Front, Kicks Off Armed Forces Week
PEACHTREE CITY, GA. (April 21, 2025) – Hangar doors will be open wide to welcome the public to the first open house of the year, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 10 at Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Airbase Georgia in Peachtree City. The Airbase will honor the 80th Anniversary of VE Day and highlight the contributions of the Home Front as part of the Arsenal of Democracy. The open house also will kick off Armed Forces Week.
Airbase Georgia’s growing collection of flying World War II aircraft, the largest in the state, will be on display, including the legendary FG-1 Corsair, P-63 Kingcobra, SBD Dauntless dive bomber, and a PT-19 Cornell used to train the Tuskegee Airmen. The public also can see two restoration projects underway, an N2S Stearman and rare P-47N Thunderbolt, as well as an operational Link Trainer. Rides in selected aircraft can be purchased online here.
The event will feature Home Front re-enactors provided by Kelly’s Zeroes, a Victory Garden display, guided tours of the hangar and restoration shop, a children’s interactive booth, and historical presentations and demonstrations. Veterans’ organizations will also be on hand. The PX will be open with a variety of specially designed T-shirts, hats, patches, and other items. The Airbase will operate its dog tag machine to provide unique souvenirs to visitors. Lunch will be prepared and offered by Boy Scout Troop 75.
“Our open house is designed for families and aviation fans alike who want to share in the rich history of ‘The Greatest Generation’ and get an up-close look at Airbase Georgia’s amazing fleet of restored World War II aircraft,” said Airbase Leader Joel Perkins.
VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) celebrated on May 8th, marks the day in 1945 when Nazi Germany surrendered to the Allied Forces, effectively bringing an end to World War II in Europe. Armed Forces Week is a week-long celebration in the United States that honors the men and women who serve or have served in the various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.
The open house is open to the public free of charge.
