 Fayette County Retired Educators will meet today at 10:30 a.m. at the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church. Our program will feature a program by Evercare Hospice. The role of hospice groups is sometimes misunderstood. This is an opportunity to learn first hand what services are available. Our group is organized as a support and advocacy group for retired educators. We also keep members up to date on information from the Georgia Legislature.  All Georgia retired educators are invited to become members. As a community service organization, our meetings also serve as a drop off station for items for the Fayette Samaritans and The Honeycomb, a recycling center for supplies for present day teachers, located at LaFayette Education enter. Blending the storytelling style of the wildly popular musical “Smoke on the Mountain” with the down home humor of the movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” “Keep on the Sunny Side,” is fun and enriching entertainment for the entire family. Over 30 fine artists and crafters from across the state will be sharing their talents today and Feb.8 in Peachtree City. Juried members of the Fine Arts and Crafts Entrepreneurs (FAACE) group will be giving demonstrations and selling stained glass, paintings, ceramics, fiber art, wood and other beautiful pieces. Art with Heart is the perfect place to pick up a unique Valentine’s Day gift for your significant other, family member or friend.
The public is invited to the opening reception on Friday evening. Food, beverages, music and art are on the agenda during the drop-in reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. There is no charge to attend the reception although a voluntary donation of $5 to the church is requested. Saturday the show is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Art with Heart will benefit The Children’s Village at Christian City through voluntary donations from artists and attendees and a silent art auction.  Christian City has been caring for abandoned and abused children in a family centered residential setting since 1965. The Fayette County Faith-based Disaster Network will hold its annual conference on today at New Hope Baptist Church.
The keynote speaker will be former Adairsville City Manager Pat Cook, who will speak on the faith-based recovery effort that followed tornadoes that struck the city last year. Breakout sessions will include presentations such as praise and preparedness in your church, active shooter planning in your church, an amateur radio emergency service overview, disaster team overview, emerging threats and protecting yourself, using social media in disasters, the National Weather Service and an overview of the Ga. Emergency Management Agency.
The conference is free though an RSVP is required due to limited seating. RSVP no later than Feb. 3 if planning to attend. Conference registration begins at 8:15 a.m. on the day of the event. The conference runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be served. New Hope Baptist Church is located at 551 New Hope Road in north Fayette County.

The Cupid Chase, benefiting CURE, will take place in historic, downtown Senoia today. Planned and coordinated by Mikki Lewis, event chair, and a team of dedicated volunteers, all monies raised through The Cupid Chase 5K and 1 Mile Encouragement Walk will benefit CURE, Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy. Author Victoria Wilcox will bring stories of Doc Holliday and his Georgia and Gone With the Wind connections to the Senoia Area Historical Society at 7 p.m. Wilcox is the author of Inheritance, the first book in the historical novel trilogy “Southern Son: The Saga of Doc Holliday.” Wilcox will present “Gone With the Wind Goes West: The Surprising Southern Heritage of Doc Holliday,” followed by a book signing of Inheritance.

The South Metro Rose Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Heritage Bank at 440 N. Jeff Davis Drive in Fayetteville. All rose growers from novice to expert are invited to attend free of charge. This month’s program features Clayton Beaty, owner of Beaty Fertilizer, Inc. of Cleveland, Tennessee. Educated at Tennessee Tech, Mr. Beaty started his fertilizer business in the late 70s and in the mid 80s developed Mills Magic Rose Mix, a blend of 8 eight different organics that roses thrive on and is sold internationally. Beaty Fertilizer also carries many other types of fertilizers and gardening products. Beaty will speak to the club on a variety of topics which will include amending our soil to produce the best roses and his trip in Feb. 2013 to see the rose gardens of China. The Metro South Regional Transition Council, an eight county collaborative (including Fayette) will host a Life After High School Conference and Expo for students with disabilities and their families today. An AARP Drivers Safety Class is today at the Powell Library on Hospital Road in Newnan.  The class will teach defensive driving techniques and may just save you a pretty penny on car insurance!  The class is from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.   The cost of the class is $15 for AARP mbrs. and $20 for non mbrs. Robert J. Burch Elementary will be having its fourth annual Burch Bear Tracks today at 8 a.m. and includes Tot Trot, Mile Fun Run, and a 5K race. The primary goal for this event is to promote health and wellness through fitness as well as raise money for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in their effort to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. The secondary goal is to fund Burch’s running club in which hundreds of students participate. Entry fee is $15 per participant; registration forms can be picked up at Burch Elementary or accessed online at www.burchbears.org
