What a great weekend for McIntosh and the boys track and field team!
The McIntosh boys won the state championship for the first time in school history edging out Cedar Shoals by just two points. It was a cold, rainy, and windy weekend that was warmed by the phenomenal performance of all four McIntosh AAAAA state qualifiers. Brooks Hardy led the way by scoring two third place finishes in the shot put throwing a 49-01 feet and discus a personal record of 144-8. -He moved up in the standings for 12 huge points. Brad Hort ran a gutsy race through pain to a second place finish in the 1600m with a time of 4:19.62 and Sidney Speir dominated the 3200m for a first place win and the state championship with a time of 9:30.26. Taylor Huntley ran an inspiring race in the 800 meters securing a first place win for the state championship, knowing that he could catapult the team to a win.
“His winning effort of 1:55:97 was by far the best race of the meet and the year.” said head coach Jason Newton.
Coach Newton, first year head coach for the boys, was beaming at the news of the win. “What an amazing day for McIntosh track! I couldn’t be more proud of our guys. I am so thankful to be able to work with such driven young men.”
This state championship was a fitting way to send long time McIntosh Coach Chuck Buckle into retirement. “This was a great effort by our thrower, Brooks Hardy, distance runners, Brad Hort, Sidney Speir and unbelievable finish by Taylor Huntley in the 800M Run to win the first Track & Field Championship in the 32 year history of McIntosh HS. What a fantastic way to follow-up our state title in cross country this past fall with two state titles in one year,” said Newton.
