Whitewater High hosts author talk

Aspiring writers at Whitewater High were treated to a bit of industry expertise and advice from award-winning author Bob Moseley.

Moseley is a writer who worked for Sports Illustrated and The New York Times among other publications. He set a goal to write three books, and he hit the mark with a trio of young adult sports novels.

Throughout the day of his visit to Whitewater, Moseley spoke to English Language Arts classes, offering up tips on the creative process, like the importance of writing everyday and focusing heavily on description that appeals to all the senses.

First, it begins with having the right story to tell.

“You have to have a good idea. Something that hasn’t been done before,” said Moseley.

Arranged by Whitewater High media specialist Matia Edwards, the author talk was a great opportunity to help students learn more about the process of bringing a story from just an idea to a tangible product.

“Our students check out over 2,000 books a year, and I’m not sure how many students actually think about all that goes into creating the books in their hands,” said Edwards. “Inviting authors to our school gives students the unique opportunity to hear about author motivation, challenges, publishing, and more.”

Producing a book is no easy feat, and Edwards was happy to help the students get a peak into the process.

“I sincerely hope our students learned how challenging and rewarding it is to be an author. I hope they realize now that being an author requires a lot of perseverance and not giving up if a publisher or two or more is not interested,” said Edwards. “Mr. Moseley is a great example of an author who was turned down 12 times, but he kept trying and ended up with all of his books earning national awards.”
