Keeping Tax Rate Steady Will Keep Individual Property Tax Bills Steady; Overall Revenue Increase Comes from Growing Number of Taxpayers
Fayetteville, Georgia (October 13, 2025) Fayetteville City Council members are scheduled to set the City’s property tax millage rate for 2025 at their October 23rdpublic hearing, and City staff are proposing that they keep the same millage that has been on the books since 2018, which will keep homesteaded property tax bills steady but will still help increase overall revenue for the City.
The millage rate set in 2018 for City of Fayetteville property owners is 5.646, and the current proposal is to keep that rate again for 2025. Due to ongoing growth in the community, the tax base has increased since 2024, so it is estimated that overall property tax revenue will increase by 3.6 percent this year, netting an additional $355,000 for the City.
“This is the first tax digest we have prepared since the State of Georgia passed and adopted House Bill 581 back in 2024. That law requires tax values on homesteaded properties to be frozen at the 2024 values,” said Mike Bush, City of Fayetteville’s Finance Director. “Residents owning a home in the City of Fayetteville valued at $425,000 in 2024 would have paid $959.82 that year, and they will pay the same dollar amount this year as well. None of our residents with homestead exemptions will pay more in City taxes this year than they did last year.
“Because we have more homes and homeowners this year than we did last year, our property tax revenues are forecasted to increase, so legally we are required by the state to advertise this as a property tax increase,” Bush continued. “That can be confusing, which is why we wanted to publish this additional press release.”
Bush noted that the City of Fayetteville property tax is only one portion of the overall tax bill. Property owners are also subject to Fayette County and Fayette County Board of Education taxes.
Public hearings for the 2025 millage rate will be held on October 16, 2025 at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., and on October 23, 2025, at 6 p.m., in the Council Chamber at Fayetteville City Hall, 210 Stonewall Avenue West, Fayetteville, Georgia 30214.
