The Flat Rock Middle Food Forest is getting a big boost thanks to a $8,300 grant from the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation.

The Eagles use the Food Forest to grow fresh food for cooking lessons, for the school cafeteria, and for donating to the community. It reinforces multidisciplinary learning and helps students learn about environmental issues and nutrition, while gaining confidence and a sense of place.

Dr. Tarchell Peeples-Caruthers, STEAM Careers Teacher, applied for and accepted the grant on behalf of the school.

“With this support, we’ll be able to grow our school Food Forest through traditional gardening, composting, hydroponics, and aeroponics. This gives students hands-on experiences in innovative gardening, healthy cooking, and sustainable food production,” said Peeples-Caruthers. “Together, we’re sowing the seeds for a healthier future for our kids and connecting generations to a healthier, more fulfilling way to live.”
