Local pizzaiolo Joey Karvelas recently took part in one of the most respected culinary

competitions in the world — the Pizza Expo held in Las Vegas. Competing against 600 chefs from around the globe, Karvelas earned fourth place in the traditional pizza category for the Southeast region, a proud moment for both him and his team.

Karvelas, of Karvelas Pizza Co., operates six locations across Georgia, including one in

Peachtree City at 2870 GA-54 in MacDuff Crossing West. Known for their New York-style pizza made with fresh, house-prepared ingredients, Karvelas Pizza Co. has become a reliable gathering spot for locals, families, and visitors alike.

For the competition, Joey featured a customer favorite called the “Georgia Pie.” Inspired by Long Island’s classic grandma-style pizza, this pie is traditionally square and pan-cooked with simple toppings like garlic, olive oil, and tomato sauce. Karvelas adapted the style by using his

signature aged dough—fermented over several days—then hand-stretching it into a round pie and topping it with Italian sausage and diced pepperoni.

“I’ve loved this style of pizza for years,” said Karvelas. “I knew I had to showcase its rich flavors at such a high-stakes event. It’s all about the quality of ingredients, and the dough is made fresh daily at our restaurant. It ferments for several days, which really enhances its signature flavor.” To ensure the pizza was made exactly as intended, Joey carefully packed and transported his

ingredients and dough to Las Vegas himself. Judges took note of the craftsmanship, citing the pizza’s texture and flavor balance as standout elements.

Located in MacDuff Crossing West, Karvelas Pizza Co. in Peachtree City continues to serve handmade pies with a focus on quality and community. Joey’s recent recognition is just one example of the dedication and craft that go into every pizza—right here in our town.

Although he didn’t take home the coveted first place, the recognition of being among the top four in the Southeast has solidified Karvelas Pizza as a must try for any pizza lover. “This experience has been nothing short of amazing, and it’s just the beginning, Karvelas said. “We’re excited about returning to Vegas to continue to compete, and I have no doubt we’ll be number one eventually!”

With this recent achievement, Joey Karvelas and Karvelas Pizza, are drawing attention not only to their delicious offerings but also their unwavering passion for pizza. The local community is proud to support a chef who is dedicated to putting Karvelas (and Southeastern pizza makers) on the culinary map.
