Churches announce Holy Week and Easter services

Community Sunrise Service

The community is invited to a sunrise service on the courthouse lawn in downtown Fayetteville early Easter Sunday, April 21, at 6:45 a.m.

With combined planning by Fayetteville First United Methodist Church, Edgefield Baptist Church, Fayetteville Christian Church, Flat Rock AME Church, North Fayette UMC and Main Street Fayetteville, the service will feature music from the Flat Rock AME choir. Rev. Beverly Casstevens from North Fayette UMC is preaching.

“We are grateful for this opportunity to celebrate the message of new life and hope with all our neighbors,” said Rev. John Barnes, pastor of Fayetteville First UMC who is helping plan the service. “Easter presents a wonderful occasion to connect our community.”

After the service, Fayetteville First UMC invites the community into the church Fellowship Hall for an Easter Sunrise Breakfast beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church

Christ Our Shepherd will host two services on Maundy Thursday, April 18, at 12:15 noon and 7 p.m. First Presbyterian Church will share in worship, with Pastor Morgan Morse Hay joining Pastors Fritz Wiese and Miriam Beecher and musicians from both churches in leading the services. FPC’s Director of Christian Education, the Rev. Katelyn Nutter Dowling. Worshipers will remember and share in Jesus’ Last Supper.

Christ Our Shepherd will participate in the community Good Friday Service at First Baptist Church at noon on April 19. That evening at 8 p.m. the church will offer a Tenebrae, Service of Shadows. Worship will include scriptures, the Solemn Reproaches from the Cross, and music by John Ferguson, Hal Hopson, Richard Proulx, F. Melius Christiansen, and Theodore Dubois.

The unique experience of Easter Vigil will be on April 20, 6-7 p.m. The service progresses from the solemn contemplation of Holy Week to the joy of Easter.

Christ Our Shepherd will offer three services Easter morning. Festival worship in the sanctuary at 8:30 and 11 a.m. features music by Sanctuary Choir, Joyful Noise Ringers, and the COS Winds. Contemporary Worship in Fellowship Hall is at 9:45 a.m. Pastor Fritz Wiese will preach, and Pastor Miriam Beecher will celebrate Holy Communion.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

All are invited to the 3rd annual Easter Miracle Celebration at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2021 Redwine Rd. Fayetteville, GA 30215.

This free family event celebrates the resurrection of Christ with fine art, live musical performances and media. There will be a community art room and light refreshments.

Episcopal Church of the Nativity

Fayetteville First UMC

The community is invited to a Service of Holy Communion on Maundy Thursday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Fayetteville First United Methodist church.  Rev. Carson Thaxton will be preaching at this service of music and worship.

On Good Friday, April 19, the choirs and orchestra will present a Service of Tenebrae at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Fayetteville First UMC. This musical service is an adaptation of the ancient Tenebrae service dating back to the earliest years of the church.

From the Latin word meaning “darkness” or “shadow,” Tenebrae depicts events of Holy Week from Jesus’ triumphal entry to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to his burial  through the extinguishing of candles and the dimming of lights as the service progresses. The Service of Tenebrae offers an opportunity to become more aware of one’s own humanity and relationship with Christ as the music and text draw participants into the action and events that led to the crucifixion.

The community is invited to a community Easter Sunrise Service hosted by Fayetteville First UMC, Fayetteville Christian Church, The Episcopal Church of the Nativity, Flat Rock AME Church, Golden Moment Christian Ministries, North Fayette UMC and Main Street Fayetteville at 6:45 a.m. All are invited to a community breakfast following the service in the Fayetteville First UMC Fellowship Hall.
