Gordon LaVerne Evert, Jr., 74, of Fayetteville passed away peacefully at his home on September 25, 2018.

He was born in St. Mary’s, Pa. on October 16, 1943 to the late Gordon L. Evert and Katharine Smith Evert of Ridgway, Pa.  After graduating from Penn State University in 1968, he began teaching in an elementary school as a PE teacher in Harrisburg, Pa.  Later that year, he began teaching at his old alma mater, St. Mary’s High School, where he taught math and PE.  He was also the head coach of the Junior Varsity football team and an assistant coach for the Varsity football team.

In 1970, Gordon was hired by Delta Air Lines in Atlanta.  He began his career by working on the Ramp, moved to Reservations and spent most of his career in Consumer Affairs as a Manager for the Central Baggage Service.  He retired from Delta in 1999. His Delta Family was very special to him.

During the 1970’s and 1980’s, he worked on weekends for the Oakland Raiders as a professional scout.  He thoroughly enjoyed going to the football games, having a pass to sit in the press box, documenting plays and injuries, and coming home to submit his report.

Gordon enjoyed working with children, especially coaching.  He was a coach of the very first Lightning Soccer Team in Fayette County.  His greatest joy was coaching his own children in basketball and soccer.  As long as he was able, he attended as many games and activities for his grandchildren as he could.

Gordon is survived by his wife of 50 years, Connie Earley Evert; four children, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren – Kerry (Amy) Evert of Fayetteville, and their children, Ashley and Kyle; Jennifer (Mitch) Skaggs of Nicholasville, KY, and their children and grandchildren, Jordan Skaggs, Whitney (Charles) Farley and Austin, Aiden and Addison; Lesley (Ryan) Edwards and Parker; Gordon (Mandy) Evert III of Laurel, MS, and their child, Gordon E. Evert and his children, Bailey and Brantley; and Brian (Daphne) Evert of Newnan, and their children, Tyler and Lacey; his brothers, Perry Evert and Peter Evert, both of Ridgway, PA; and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2018 in the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville, Ga., with Pastor Mike Linch officiating.  The family will receive friends from 9:30-11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family lovingly requests donations in Gordon’s memory to Homestead Hospice, 772 Greison Trail, Suite H, Newnan, GA 30263.
